Our friend Jim Monroe suggested a great book called Combat Jump : The Young Men Who Led the Assault into Fortress Europe, July 1943 by Ed Ruggero. The book is about the first Combat Jump into Sicily by the 505th during "Operation Husky" in WW2. It's a good read. I have read 186 pages in the first two days of owning it. I would suggest it to anyone wanting to learn what it was like for the 505th when first jumped into combat as a unit. Part of the 509th jumped into Africa during "Operation Torch", but they were a Battalion only. the entire 505th regiment jumped into Sicily. It was the first time any US Paratroopers ever jumped into combat with that amount of people. The book tells about the people, the training, the jump itself, the combat after the jump, and the problems the Regiment faced. Its very well written and worth reading.

Read it, excellent read and has some great photo inserts as reference for uniforms and gear during the Sicily campaign.
Little Factoid: After the Sicily jump, the very next day all C-47's in the ETO were painted with the invasion stripes for ID.
The 504th and 505th got hit by their own ships on the way in and a lot of planes were shot down.

This book is definitely excellent. Detailed, meticulous and reads like an adventure novel. Highly recommend this book as reference to anyone wanting to know the 82nd's key role in Operation Husky!
