It's interesting how as the war progressed the pin change to reflect what had occurred for the regiment. The last one on the end was designed and approved in 1952, obviously it was after the war had eneded. Another interesting piece of triva, the four slanting blue bars on the 1952 pin, stand for the four major airbirone assaults - Siciliy, Italy, Normandy, and Holland. The Pin Mayo posted up has three, which would probably make it before Holland but after Normandy. But has four Parachutes so that would also indicate four jumps. The point is everything on the pins has a meaning. Nothing is there without a purpose or meaning. The the wings were added to the panther after they made airborne jumps. The third pin was the end of the war, the six gold stars represent the six campaigns the 505th was a part of: Sicily Naples - Foggia Normandy Rhineland Ardennes Central Europe

That is a good question. I have no idea. Maybe it's both! It appears to me that the first one is WW2 and the last three are post war. I checked the dates and posted them below.

Here is the issue. The original design was pre-war, in the instant the Division had not done anything. Because of the unit's distinguished service during the war the simple version was never approved. Unlike other units which either had history from WW1 or came up with Their design after entering the war, the 505th didn't.
The post war version would be made and given to veterans to wear. And because of distinguishing marks the post war DUI, reflects the accomplishments. This is why you won't find the simple pre-war versions as repros. What you may find is orginals one at a time.

I think the jury is out. I dunno. We'll have to do more research. But, I did buy (3) of the Number 1.

I did find several pics with guys wearing DI's but there were far more without them. My opinion is that it appeared that most of the guys did not have them. If we are honoring the veterans of the 505th with our class A impression, then we should have the DI's if only to identify who we are honoring to those who otherwise would not know.

Im going to guess that maybe the guys that had the DI's may have had them made or possibly found them at a p.x?
I agree that it would be a good idea to wear them to show who we are honouring. I would vote to wear them.

Fewer pics with guys wearing them probably means they were private purchase and maybe few available (speculation). I agree with wearing them for the same reason though. How about we make it optional for the jackets. I have seen a few pics of troopers wearing one on thwir garrison cap too. Thoughts ??
