Regarding .38 caliber revolvers: I have noticed a member using a .38 caliber revolver at an event yet it is not listed by Mayo above. What is the source material for an airborne soldier known to have used a .38 caliber revolver? Just FYI they are not in the table of equipment of a WWII airborne infantry company. Also .38 caliber ammunition was not pushed in the supply system of the airborne division. Thanks in advance for the help.

38s were ether taken from air force personel, or came from home

Is there any proof that paratroopers acquired .38 revolvers from air force personnel? A known incident? A photograph? I know that a TV show depicted a soldier receiving one in the mail from a police chief. Not really valid evidence in and of itself.

Paratroopers acquired pistols from several sources, mostly private purchase types. This info comes from the very knowledgeable and probably most informed person on the 101st- Mark Bando, it also was researched by my friend and author of a book about Fox Co 101st- Terry Poyser. In fact in some instances, very uncommon, Single Action Colts were used. This all pertains primarily to the Normandy campaign. The TO&E is one thing, what they actually did is another.
Pictures are by far the best source, but we don't have pictures of every trooper obviously. Bando and Poyser have spoken to countless vets to try to fill the gaps. Their research can be trusted 100%.
The revolver sent in the mail from a Police Chief, as seen in Band of Brothers is well documented to that specific trooper.
These pistols aren't on the list here, because they require pre-approval to maintain authenticity standards and proper ratios.

We try to limit revolvers and pistols in numbers and by timeline.. I have only seen a few out in the field with NCO's.

I generally carry bobs .38 special but only if it's correct to the event. Haven't seen many .38's tho. Just let me know guys and I can stop carrying it. Want to try and keep it as authentic as possible
