Last week, RCPT-USA held Operation Sandsnake II in conjunction with the Falling Gators Intercollegiate Boogie at Skydive Palatka. We held two classes of the Basic Round Parachute Course, Airborne Refresher, and conducted jumps all week with the Cessna, Kodiak, and a Skyvan which arrived on Friday. On Sunday, the star of the show arrived, a UH-1 Huey helicopter. I got in a few static line jumps and a free fall jump from the Skyvan. I Jumpmastered the Huey but did not get to do a rotary wing static line jump. I did get a 5,000 foot “hop and pop” from the Huey with an MC-4, military free fall chute. The MC-4 is a large ram air canopy designed to deliver a combat equipped jumper. Not exactly a sport rig, but it provides a very soft landing. That was quite a chopper blast. Good times were had by all. Our next event dates will be in October. D-Day 2019 is rapidly approaching so if you want to learn to jump or get current start making plans.
